ISPs, Hosting and multiple instances

I have been having a great debate with a few people over the last week about ColdFusion and hosting. It seems that there is a huge challenge when it comes to how ISP host CF and what features that they expose to the developer.

There is a great balancing act here between the ISPs security, management and scalability and the features that developers need. The key challenge is price versus performance.

I have heard of many ISPs that have tens or hundreds of CF sites on a single CF server (CF standard! Can you believe that!) and it all works smoothly. The other end of the scale is a dedicated box, one customer, one copy of CF and then the customer can go to town with the settings and the ISP is safe in the knowledge that they can not affect other people’s sites. There is no middle ground here – dedicated hosting is expensive, shared hosting is inflexible.
